As dawn breaks a Special Operations Executive Lysander Mk III of 161 Squadron taxis to halt after a long flight from occupied France.
In the cramped rear compartment two secret agents prepare to disembark, relieved at last to be able to stretch their legs. They are greeted by a fresh fall of snow, with heavy banks of cloud promising more to come. Also there to welcome them are senior RAF officers who will waste no time in de-briefing the agents. The Special Duties Lysander pilots were as brave and as skilled as any from the fighter or bomber squadrons but the nature of their missions meant they remained largely unheralded, even after the war ended. These highly dangerous clandestine missions to take undercover agents in and out of France were a vital part of the allied intelligence gathering operations and undoubtedly had a significant part to play in the eventual victory in Europe.
