Attack on the Tirpitz - Artist Proof by Philip West

Attack on the Tirpitz by Philip West features RAF Lancasters of 617 ad 9 Squadrons.

November 12th 1944. Lancaster's from Nos 617 and 9 Squadron bombed the German battleship 'Admiral von Tirpitz' at anchor just off Tromso. Using Barnes Wallis designed Tallboy bombs dropped from between 12,000 to 16,000 feet they delivered several very close misses and three or more direct hits. A column of steam and smoke shot up to 300 feet and within a few minutes the massive ship began to turn turtle. The RAF and Royal Navy had had several previous 'goes' at the Tirpitz with limited success, but on this occasion the threat from this extremely powerful warship ended.

The painting depicts Wing Commander J B Tait's Lancaster after his bombing run, staying on the scene to observe the outcome of the mission. The rest of 617 and 9 Squadron aircraft complete their runs and turn to head home to Lossiemouth. Down below at low level another Lancaster is orbiting and filming the destruction. This Lancaster came from 463 Squadron and was the last one to return home. With only one Lancaster being seriously damaged all the aircraft completed the mission.

Each print in Philip West’s Limited Edition, Attack on the Tirpitz (Artist Proof), is signed by Tirpitz raid veteran pilots:
SL Lawrence 'Benny' Goodman (617 Sqn)
Sqn. Ldr. Tony Iveson, DFC, AE, CRAeS.FC.

Lysanders of 161 Special Operations Squadron turn onto their final course to a clandestine landing field somewhere in central occupied France, during a full moon period in 1943. Based at Tempsford, Bedfordshire and often operating from Tangmere to shorten the flight, the pilots flew a dead reckoning course to their first turning point, usually on the River Loire, using rudimentary navigating equipment. The moonlit town of Blois is easily distinguishable by its chateau, churches and bridge with the Forest of Chambord beyond. The agents in the rear cockpit prepare themselves by torchlight for the forthcoming landing. Each print in Philip West's Limited Edition, Loire Rendevouz, is signed by four highly distinguished Lysander pilots: Flt. Lt Peter Arkell, OBE, USAF Medal of Distinction Flt Lt. Murray Anderson, DFC*, US Air Medal Flt. Lt. R G 'Bob' Large, DFC, Legion d'honneur Sir Lewis Hodges, KCB, CBE, DSO, DFC.Subject: Special Operations Westland Lysander.
