A tribute to the heroics and sacrifice of Bomber Command during World War Two, this collector's autograph display includes the original signature of Air Marshal Sir HAROLD 'MICK' MARTIN KCB DSO* DFC** AFC.
To commemorate and pay tribute to the crews of Bomber Command, artist Darryl Legg has chosen to bring to life what was almost certainly their most well know operation of World War Two - the Dambuster Raid. The 617 Squadron attack on the Ruhr Dams in May 1943 was generally regarded as the most daring and innovative bombing raid in history. Flying at night just a few feet above the water, lit only by the moon, Lancasters of 617 Squadron attacked the heavily defended Ruhr Dams, releasing their Barnes Wallis designed bombs with surgical precision. Bouncing across the water, bombs struck the dam wall, sank and hydrostatically detonated, exploding deep below the waterline. The Mohne and Eder dams were breached, the hydro-electric power stations incapacitated, severely damaging Germany’s industrial production.
Requiring great flying skill, navigational precision, and inordinate courage, what better way is there to remember the heroism of the bomber aircrews of the Royal Air Force, than to celebrate the triumph of the Dambusters. And who better to endorse each commemorative limited edition ensemble with his original autograph than the Deputy Leader and pilot of Lancaster AJ-P on this most famous of bomber raids: Air Marshal, Sir Harold ‘Mick’ Martin.
Air Marshal Sir HAROLD 'MICK' MARTIN KCB DSO* DFC** AFC.
Sir Max Hastings, an authority on RAF Bomber Command, describes Mick Martin as "one of three great bomber pilots of WWII" - certainly he became one of Bomber Command's most highly decorated pilots. Initially flying Hampdens with 455 RAAF Sqn, in 1941 Mick Martin took part in the first 1000-bomber raids on Germany, flying a Manchester. After converting to Lancasters, and possibly due to his penchant for low-level flying, in 1943 he was recruited to 617 Sqn by Wing Commander Guy Gibson to fly as his Deputy Leader for the secret Dams Raid.
