In 1941 the Gloster E.28/39 was the first British jet powered aircraft to fly. It was developed to test the viability of using Frank Whittle's innovative turbojet design in a combat aircraft. It was hugely successful and led directly to the development of the Gloster Meteor which, in 1944, became the first combat capable jet aircraft to enter service with the RAF.
