When this purposeful looking, squat, angular aircraft first appeared in the skies over France in 1941, it came as quite a shock and soon gained a fearsome reputation and the nickname ‘Butcher Bird’. A superb fighting machine, it served the Luftwaffe in many variants throughout the war.
