A special tribute to the iconic Supermarine Spitfire, this collector's autograph display includes the original signature of legendary Spitfire pilot Flight Lieutenant Sir ALAN SMITH DFC.

The Spitfire was, and still is, an icon of aviation history. In 1940 it came to symbolise the fighting spirit of a nation when control of its skies was the last remaining barrier to enemy invasion. Standing alone against the assembled might of German Forces, only the devil-may-care courage and sheer determination of the RAF’s young pilots, stood between Britain's freedom and Hermann Goering's mighty Luftwaffe. When the Battle of Britain began in the summer of 1940, although it was the Hurricane squadrons that bore the brunt of the fighting, it was the Spitfire that fired the nation’s imagination. The Spitfire continued to be developed and improved versions played an important role in many campaigns including the D-Day invasions.

Arguably the greatest defensive fighter ever built, this legendary little aircraft, revered by its pilots and feared by it foes, earned a place in aviation folklore like no other aircraft before it or since.

This display ensemble pays homage to the Spitfire and the dashing young pilots that flew it in combat. The artwork by Darryl Legg depicts the Spitfire of legendary fighter leader Sir Douglas Bader on a fighter sweep over northern France in 1941. This aircraft was a rare MkVa configuration being a MkV but with the cannons replaced by machines guns as in the MKI, an arrangement insisted upon by Bader.

Expertly double mounted with metal RAF pilots wings and a miniature replica DFC medal this highly collectable ensemble carries the original signature of Spitfire pilot Flight Lieutenant Sir ALAN SMITH DFC. Joining No. 616 Squadron as a sergeant pilot in January 1941, based at RAF Tangmere, Alan Smith flew the Spitfire under Wing Commander Douglas Bader and was selected as his wingman a role in which he was described as “a perfect number two”.
