The story of the Boeing 747 at British Airways actually starts with BOAC when its first 747 was introduced in 1971, a year after it entered service in the USA, it was used initially on flights to New York. In 1974 BOAC and British European Airways merged to become British Airways, by this time the 747 was flying a number of important international routes including South Africa and Australia. This revolutionary wide-bodied jet formed the backbone of the British Airways long haul fleet for many years. The 747 underwent many upgrades over its long life to keep it current - probably the most notable being the next-generation 747-400 variant introduced into the British Airways fleet in 1989. After nearly 50 years of sterling service the Boeing 747 was finally retired by British Airways in the summer of 2020.
