Two highly decorated Spitfire pilots, Al Deere being recognized as one of the RAF's most tenacious fighter pilots. Laddie Lucas, related to Douglas Bader, flew Spitfires in Europe and was one of Malta's great wing leaders. Top scoring fighter pilot from New Zealand, Al Deere was known throughout the RAF for his exploits in the Spitfire. He survived an incredible 8 bail-outs and by the end of the Battle of Britain had destroyed 11 enemy aircraft. Laddie Lucas commanded 249 Sqn's Spitfires in Malta, the RAF's top-scoring squadron at the height of the island's battle.
